FAQ

A. General information

1. What does a “wireless connection within the Prague Airport premises” stand for?

It is a service you can use to surf internet or log into your company internal network - easy, reliable, wireless. The service is based on WLAN wireless network or as some call it - WiFi. At the Prague airport area you can connect free service WiFi FREE (SSID is prg.aero-free) or service WiFi HotSpot (SSID is prg.aero-hotspot).

2. Are there any limitations to the supplied wireless connection?

The speed of free part of the WiFi service is limited.

3. What personal data of mine do I have to share with you?

No personal data are required for connecting to the network of prg.aero_free. To connect via the prg.aero_hotspot network, it is necessary to create a personal account. To create a personal account, your e-mail address and nationality will be required. No details regarding your credit card will be revealed to us as the website where you enter the relevant information is a bank website. The bank consecutively only informs us on the validity or invalidity of the payment, respectively, on whether the payment has been accepted and whether enough funds were available to process the transaction.

4. Will Prague Airport share my personal data with a third party?

No.

5. How does WLAN work?

WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) is the technology of wireless networks based on the 802.11b standard. This standard enables a high level of transmission (at speeds of up to 11 Mbit/s) between the receiving and the transmitting unit at a distance of up to 100 metres. The user needs a notebook or portable PC supporting the 802.11 standard or already containing a WLAN card.

6. What is the difference between WLAN, UMTS and GPRS?
WLAN is a technology from the area of local networks, i.e., the common PC-LAN-connection of a company through a radio connection. On the contrary, UMTS and GPRS are traditional mobile radio technologies which make the data communication within mobile radio networks more comfortable and faster. GPRS, UMTS and WLAN thus logically complement one another. As it is not possible to view the cordless phones used for land line connections as a substitute for cell phones, the same principle applies to WLAN as opposed to mobile UMTS.

A typical use of the respective technologies is the following:

  • GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) – global coverage of an area
  • UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone Standard) – densely populated areas
  • WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) – highly frequented public places or places without demand for extra mobility

B. Use

1. How does the service of wireless connection work?

If you turn on your notebook, equipped with a relevant WLAN card, in the area covered by WLAN, the WLAN network is automatically detected (in other cases, it is necessary to change the SSID setting to “any” to select WLAN). Open your internet browser (it might be necessary to deactivate proxy) and you will be automatically redirected to the homepage of Prague Airport wireless network. From there, you can link to any internet sites of your choice within the free network or you can follow the instructions given at the Prague Airport wireless network homepage and connect to the paid part of the service.

2. Is signing an agreement with Prague Airport a condition for using the service of a wireless connection?

No, it’s not.

3. What are the prerequisites enabling the use of the service?

First you must be within the area covered by WLAN which is anywhere in terminals 1 and 2 at Prague Airport. Second, you have to have an end-user mobile tool supporting WLAN. If your mobile device has not been equipped with WLAN, please contact the manufacturer.

4. What end-user device will allow me to use the service?

A typical end-user device for the use of the service of HotSpot is a notebook. Use of PDA or other mobile telephone devices is also possible, however, only provided such device supports the standard of 802.11b.

5. What is the necessary notebook set up enabling the use of the service?

The majority of notebooks supporting the WLAN technology have been pre-set for you so that you can use the service without any further set up. In all other cases, you can use the following instructions (based on the Windows 2000/XP operating system as settings for other types of Windows operating systems are similar) to set your up computer.

To confirm the SSID setting of your computer, please follow the instructions below:

1. Click the “Start” button
2. Go to “Settings”
3. Select “Network Connections”
4. Select “Wireless Network Connection” and right click it. From the following menu, select “Properties”. Click the tab “General” and the following dialogue window will appear:

Local Area Connection Properties 1

5. Select the internet protocol TCP/IP and click the “Properties” button.

Local Area Connection Properties 2

6. Select “Obtain an IP address automatically” and confirm your setting by clicking the “OK” button.

6. How shall I set my mobile phone or PDA to be able to use the service?

The mobile phone or PDA setting is proprietary right of each manufacturer. Therefore, it is necessary to follow the enclosed users’ instructions.

7. Where can I buy a WLAN card?

A WLAN card can be bought in IT supply stores.

8. Do I have to install any special software to my notebook to be able to use the service?

The only software necessary is the operating software of your WLAN card and internet browser. Wireless connection within Prague Airport premises does not require any additional software.

9. Is it necessary to alter the Microsoft Internet Explorer set up?

It is only necessary to ensure that the following options have not been ticked:

1. open your browser and go to the “Tool” menu;
2. select “Internet Options” and click the “Connections” tab;
3. in the “Local Area Networks (LAN) settings” sub-menu, click “LAN settings” button.

4. Please check that the following options have not been ticked: “Automatically detect settings”, “Use automatic configuration script” and “Use a proxy server for your LAN”. Confirm your setting by clicking the “OK” button.

10. What operating systems are compatible with the service?

The wireless connection within the Prague Airport premises is in fact independent of any operating systems and can be used with any operating system provided a compatible internet browser has been installed (e.g. Internet Explorer).

11. How shall I install the operating software for my WLAN card?

Respective operating software will vary according to the WLAN card type. Please follow the instructions given in the users’ instructions you have received together with your WLAN card.

12. How will I know whether my WLAN card is compatible with the service?

The wireless connection within Prague airport premises is a network of WLAN 802.11b, respectively 802.11a or 802.11g which makes it compatible with all cards supporting these standards.

13. Can the service also be used by Macintosh users?

The wireless connection within Prague airport premises is a network of WLAN 802.11b, respectively 802.11a or 802.11g which makes it compatible with all cards supporting these standards.

14. Will the connection remain stable even with a number of users?

The service stability does not depend on the number of users logged in. The data transmission speed depends on the number of clients using the network. The more users transmitting data at the same time, the lower the speed for each individual user.

15. What functions can be performed using the service (e.g.: e-mail, calendar, internet, etc.)?

The wireless connection within Prague Airport premises provides you with the option of linking to internet or your company intranet (for which we recommend that a client’s VPN is used). It is therefore possible to use all IP based applications – e-mail, www, streaming, file transfer, internet-chat, etc.

16. Will I be able to connect to my company intranet using the service?

Yes, you will, provided your intranet can be accessed via internet. For the security reasons, we recommend that a client’s VPN is used.

17. Is it possible to stream video using the service?

Yes, it is as you will be connecting to internet using the service and will thus be allowed to use all of its online features. WLAN technology is but a transmitting technique which does not limit its users in any way. Internet based videoconferences or streaming TV programmes are activities performed without any problems.

D. Location of the service

1. Where can I learn in what areas the service is available?

The service is available in Terminals 1 and 2 at Prague Airport.
