Main Runway at Prague Airport to Undergo Regular Autumn Maintenance
Prague Airport will be carrying out regular autumn maintenance of the runway system between September 13 and September 26. The main runway, RWY 06/24, will be undergoing repairs after the most operationally demanding time of the year, the summer season, to get ready for winter operations.
The main runway (RWY 06/24) will be closed from 9/13 (8 AM) until 9/26 (2 PM). Traffic will be shifted to the adjacent runway (RWY 13/31), except for nighttime traffic subject to earlier agreements with surrounding municipalities. Because of meteorological conditions, landings will take place primarily in the direction leading away from Prague, takeoffs in the direction of Kladno. The planned parallel runway will allow the airport to undertake seasonal maintenance without the necessity of shifting traffic to the adjacent runway.
During the maintenance, nighttime traffic will be suspended at the adjacent runway. From midnight until 5 am flight takes place at the Prague Airport. The time period between midnight and 1 AM will be reserved exclusively for resolving traffic problems. Planned night flights have been shifted to times before and after the hours of suspension upon consultation with the airlines.
Autumn maintenance must be carried out each year, particularly for flight safety reasons. The work includes repair of local defects such as cracks, broken edges and corners of concrete slabs, as well as the repair of damaged (asphalt) surface layers. It also involves routine maintenance of expansion joints and horizontal signage. The required braking action must be put in place for winter. For this reason, the runway surface must have so-called antiskid reapplied.
The maintenance work is coordinated with Air Traffic Control of the CR in order to minimize its impact on air traffic. Representatives of municipalities and urban areas around the airport are always informed of maintenance dates in advance.
