Prague Airport has opened a brand new tanker depot that can service up to 34 vehicles and a new, approximately 2.4-km-long underground pipeline system for aviation fuel. The new set of structures enables more effective aircraft handling and provides more efficient work with aviation fuels, following the latest safety and operating standards of large international airports. The facility also foretells the airport’s future expansion. The original tanker depot will be removed and the space will be used to develop manoeuvring areas for the first stage of Terminal 2’s expansion, which was approved by the Czech Ministry of Finance in November.

The new tanker depot is located east of the cargo terminal , spreading over an area of 1.75 hectares. “The construction of the new tanker depot and the connected aviation fuel pipeline is one of the key projects in the airport´s short-term development plan and is part of our preparations for the long-term construction development of terminal and runway capacities. By opening the depot, we are responding to changing standards and growing operating demands that go hand in hand with the increased number of serviced passengers at Prague Airport,” says Vaclav Rehor, the Chair of the Board of Directors.

The new depot has greater capacity and provides modern technical facilities for Prague Airport’s partner companies in charge of airport handling. The old tanker depot no longer met modern operating and safety standards. Moreover, it was located right where the expanded Terminal 2 and other related structures will be built. In the future, it will be torn down to free up space for new de-icing stations that will serve as a remote aircraft handling area during summer. It will be able to accommodate either four mid-haul or two long-haul aircraft.

The depot can park up to 34 tankers that can actively use three aviation fuel dispensers, each of them with separate fuelling units for faster service. One additional dispenser will remain as a standby unit. The new depot is situated adjacent to service workshops and warehouses, a business administration building, and positions where tankers and their accessories undergo technical testing.

The new 2,350-metre-long underground pipeline that is connected to the depot will make supplying aviation fuel from the warehouse faster and safer. It includes two independent pipeline routes; one is active and the other is a backup. If one pipeline route experiences any type of failure, the other one can immediately supply fuel. This modern pipeline system allows for a maximum supply of 25.5 cubic metres of fuel per minute. The cost of the new depot and the pipeline was approximately CZK 540 million.
