Prague Airport expects a year-on-year increase of more than 5% in terms of the number of passengers handled this summer. It is estimated that up to 2 million passengers will pass through the airport during both the months of July and August. Prague Airport has prepared for its busiest operational period of the year with a number of innovations and new services primarily designed to ensure passenger comfort and contribute to increased capacities.

“In the summer season, from April to October, we expect that we will handle approximately 640,000 more passengers than last year. This represents an increase of more than 5%. This will also mean that we will reach the maximum possible capacity of the airport, which we can only respond to with partial adjustments within the existing infrastructure. Thankfully, it will certainly be possible to resolve the increasingly insufficient airport capacity through the implementation of our long-term development plans,” says Václav Řehoř, Chairman of the Prague Airport Board of Directors.

In Terminal 1, the modernisation of three gates with new boarding bridges has been completed, including one new gate equipped with an additional bridge. As a result, up to six additional medium-haul planes can be handled each day. This enables the ability to increase the daily passenger capacity by as many as 1,000 passengers. The modernisation of a total of three gates and boarding bridges in Terminal 1, including all construction work on the airport and the terminal building, required an investment of approximately CZK 121 million.

In addition, a total of eight new check-in counters have been established in Terminal 1 in the past few months, and they are already in full operation. These new counters have increased the capacity of the check-in process for all flights including long-haul flights, which are also increasing in number. The construction of these new counters required an investment of CZK 34 million. Over the next few months, a further twelve new check-in counters will be built in Terminal 2. In addition, an entirely new apron and 24 more counters are being built at the same site. These could be available to passengers in the 2020 summer season.

In order to support passenger information services, Prague Airport has increased the number of information assistants in the field, known as the Red Team. A total of 140 information assistants in red T-shirts are available in the airport during the summer season, 15% more than last year. Moreover, these assistants are also available for passengers at long-haul flight departure gates.

In order to ensure passenger comfort during the busy season, Prague Airport has opened a new relaxation zone in Terminal 2. The number of refreshment vending machines will additionally be increased in the near future, and refreshment corners will be established in luggage rooms. Seven children's corners at various departure gates will also be modernised. Furthermore, Prague Airport has introduced a new special security check-in procedure at Terminal 2 for families with children in prams.

As regards parking services, one new entrance/exit from the P1 express car park is currently being built in front of Terminal 1, thereby increasing the throughput in this area. Furthermore, the surface at the P2 express car park at Terminal 2 has been repaired and new traffic signs have been installed. Last but not least, a new online parking reservation system has been introduced, as the portion of online parking reservations has increased by approximately 15% year-on-year.
