Prague Airport to issue 145 invitations to tender for modernising its infrastructure

Press Release

Over the coming months, Prague Airport will issue a total of 145 invitations to tender for the purpose of repairing, expanding, and modernising its transport, structural, and technical infrastructure. The majority of the invitations will be issued between April and December of this year. The rest will commence next year. The plan as relates to tenders for the period beginning April 2019 and stretching into 2020 is now publicly available to all potential bidders for future contracts.

We want Václav Havel Airport Prague to remain among the most modern European airports as we head into the future. For that reason, we need to invest in its modernisation. Most of the invitations to tender that we are now ready to issue concern repairs to and expansions of the infrastructure of the airport in its current form. Some contracts, however, are related to projects that are to be implemented as part of our long-term development plans. This involves, for example, preparing project documentation for the intended expansion of Terminal 2 and the completion of the elevated roadway in the central area between Terminals 1 and 2,” says Vaclav Rehor, Chairman of the Prague Airport Board of Directors.

In the field of transport structures and areas, Prague Airport will issue, for example, an invitation to tender for a contractor for the construction of the Juliett taxiway. This will serve as a rapid turn-off from the main landing and take-off runway 06/24 and will create a rapid exit for landing aircraft leading directly to the customs clearance area between passenger boarding bridges B and C. As part of its industrial construction, the Prague Airport will also launch a tender procedure for a contractor for work on a hydrant system for distributing aviation fuel to Terminal 2 and the refurbishment of all older outdoor and selected indoor air handling units in Terminal 1 (September 2019).

As regards water management structures, some of the most important invitations to tender will seek out a contractor for the reconstruction of the first north biological wastewater treatment plant (September 2019) and a contract for the implementation of the first phase of construction of a north sewer (July 2019), that is, a new backbone stormwater sewer intended to reduce the load on the existing sewer system; its construction will be essential, especially in light of further planned development of the Prague Airport complex.

Other significant tender procedures will include a competition for project documentation for the construction of new check-in areas D2 and D3 with remote aircraft parking stands and a de-icing stand in area D3. This entirely new infrastructure will be built on the site of the existing fuel truck depot, the operations of which will be replaced with the gradual commissioning of a new depot beginning roughly in the middle of this year.

The planned development of Prague Airport will also be supported by the completed bridging of the existing D6 motorway, the Jeneček Tunnel, which is the leading investment in a parallel runway construction project. An invitation to tender for this construction work will be issued in June 2019. In the second half of 2019, Prague Airport will issue another invitation to tender, which will seek a contractor for project documentation for modifying and completing the elevated roadway and expansion of Terminal 2.

Prague Airport is also preparing the reconfiguration of aircraft parking stands and the replacement of passenger boarding bridges in area A2 (an invitation to tender for the project documentation was announced in April 2019, while a tender procedure for implementation is expected in March 2020) and the construction of a new departure waiting room, B20, in Terminal 1 (an invitation to tender will be issued in October 2019). In June 2019, an invitation to tender to find a contractor for the reconstruction of the Praha Restaurant and the outdoor terrace of Terminal 1 will be initiated. Assuming that the tender procedures are successful, the implementation of these two projects should take place in the first half of 2020.

An overview of prepared invitations to tender for construction projects is now publicly available to all potential candidates. In addition to the contracts mentioned above, Prague Airport also issues a number of invitations to tender each year for contractors of operational technology solutions that are not found in the newly published overview.

The expected value of all invitations to tender to be issued by the Prague Airport for structural, transport, and technical infrastructure in 2019 is CZK 2.5 billion. This estimated value will affect the amount of investments by Prague Airport in the coming years, during which the issued contracts are to be gradually implemented. This year alone, it intends to invest around CZK 3 billion into modernisation.
