The UK’s largest international airline, British Airways (BA), has won this year’s QUIETEST AIRLINE contest organised by Prague Airport in co-operation with the Prague 6 Municipality. The trophy, in the form of glass swallows, was presented to the winner by Vaclav Rehor, Chairman of the Prague Airport Board of Directors, and Ondrej Kolar, Mayor of Prague 6 Municipality, during a meeting of Prague Airport representatives with Mayors of surrounding municipalities and city districts. The contest, aimed at motivating air carriers to use more modern and quieter aircraft to operate their routes from and to Prague, evaluates, alongside noise level parameters of aircraft upon arrival or departure, flight track adherence and aircraft seat capacity use, i.e. load factor. Long-term, Prague Airport has been active in the environmental protection field, seeking, based on regular discussions with representatives of its surrounding areas, solutions for contended co-existence. The contest has become one of the efficient tools for achieving their common goal.

The contest traditionally takes place during the most intense air traffic operations at Prague Airport, i. e. from 1 May to 31 October. The ANOMS9 monitoring system, which continuously measures air traffic noise and records trajectories of all flights year round, was used to evaluate the contest. The system includes 13 stationary and 2 mobile measuring stations placed at selected locations in Václav Havel Airport Prague’s vicinity to ensure sufficient information values of the measurements.

Ten air carriers, which have serviced Václav Havel Airport Prague most frequently during the year, competed for the 2018 QUIETEST AIRLINE title in the 13th year of the contest, namely Aeroflot, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Czech Airlines, easyJet, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Ryanair and Travel Service/ Smart Wings.

“Harmonious coexistence with the immediately surrounding area is important to us. Due to the increasing air traffic, it is necessary to use all the options of motivating our partners to take a responsible approach to the residents of the airport’s vicinity. At the same time, it is important to note that, despite the increasing number of passengers handled, Prague Airport does not experience the same rapid increase in aircraft movements. This confirms the increasing number of larger aircraft deployed on flights to Prague and more efficient use of seat capacity, to which we actively motivate air carriers,” Vaclav Rehor, Chairman of the Prague Airport Board of Directors, said.

“We continually strive to improve our noise performance across our network. In addition to winning this prestigious award in Prague, new aircraft across both our short-haul and long-haul fleets improve our noise performance even further. For example, we are adding 35 A320 or A321 neos to our fleet, which are not only quieter but are also more fuel efficient,” Andy Kershaw, Environment Manager at British Airways, said.

Detailed rules of the QUIETEST AIRLINE contest and information regarding noise monitoring at Václav Havel Airport Prague are available online at: www.prg.aero under the Environment section.
