Starting this year, Prague Airport systematically supports biodiversity in its vicinity through a new Biodiversity Programme. Within its framework, it will be possible to apply for fundings of projects aimed at strengthening species diversity and ecological stability as well as increasing natural water retention and accelerated regeneration of urbanised landscapes. The programme stems from one of the company’s nine strategic ESG goals and targets the nearest municipalities and city districts including educational facilities established by them and non-profit and research organizations. Prague Airport has allocated two million crowns to fund the programme with the proviso that the applicants can receive up to 300 thousand crowns for all their projects combined. Applications may be submitted til 31 May 2023.

“We have been supporting projects in the airport surrounding areas for a long time under our ESG strategy. This year, we are launching a new conceptual programme aimed at supporting species diversity and water retention in the landscape. We will happily support projects such as the implementation of elements of the territorial system of ecological stability, care for regional varieties and old woody plants, close-to-nature modifications of watercourse beds, restorations of field boundaries, species-varied flower beds in municipalities and species-varied meadows. The programme also includes educative projects, activities aimed at incorporating the topic of biodiversity protection into curriculum, and school gardens,” Soňa Hykyšová, Environment, Sustainability, and ESG Director, said.

To ensure air traffic safety, the programme also defines non-supported areas and measures, related to the established zone of ornithological protection in the airport vicinity. These include in particular large bodies of water, planting of trees, and the implementation of other features attractive to birds in the runway corridors and in the immediate vicinity of the airport. Symbolically, applications for financial contributions may be submitted starting today, i.e., from the International Day of Forests, which is followed by the World Water Day.

Prague Airport has recently compiled a comprehensive greenery overview. Its goal is to propose, based on an analysis of the surrounding environment, specific measures within and outside the fenced area of the airport, making it more attractive to people and increasing its biological potential, while observing the conditions of the airport zone of ornithological protection. The Biodiversity Programme complements the long-term Good Neighbour Programme, under which Prague Airport distributed a total of 18 million crowns last year.

Under the new Biodiversity Programme, only projects realised in one of the cadastral areas listed below will be supported:

Červený Újezd, Dobrovíz, Horoměřice, Hostivice, Hostouň u Prahy, Jeneč u Prahy, Kněževes u Prahy, Malé Kyšice, Prague city district of Nebušice, Pavlov u Kladna, Prague city district of Přední Kopanina, Roztoky, Prague 6 city district – cadastral area of Ruzyně, Prague 17 city district – cadastral areas of Řepy, Statenice, Středokluky, Praha city district of Suchdol, cadastral areas of Tuchoměřice, Únětice, Unhošť, and Zdiby.
