Prague Airport has announced a public tender for the contractor to build a new multi storey car park intended for employees. The structure, with eight above ground storeys and one underground storey, will be located in the immediate vicinity of the APC administration building and will offer a total of 1,098 parking spaces, including 26 spaces for persons with reduced mobility. According to the current schedule, construction itself is planned for 2027 to 2029. The project is being prepared by Prague Airport as part of the overall modernisation of the airport, using the Design & Build method.
The new car park will provide modern, high capacity facilities for employees of the Prague Airport group. The project incorporates a so-called split-level system, where individual parking levels alternate by half-storeys and are linked by shorter ramps. This design allows for an increase in the number of parking spaces of approximately 15 per cent compared to conventional multi-storey car parks, while maintaining the same building floor plan. The estimated value of the public contract is CZK 1.2 billion. This is an estimate that will be refined during the tender process; the final price will be determined by the bids submitted by tenderers.
"The modernisation of Prague Airport covers not only infrastructure development and technological solutions but also measures that improve everyday conditions for our employees. They are a key part of the safe, smooth and high quality processing of passengers. We recognise that the airport operates continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and many colleagues commute at times when public transport options are limited. That is why we seek and support solutions that make their daily journey to work easier. The result will be a modern and long term sustainable facility for our employees that meets the airport’s future needs,” says Jiří Pos, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Prague Airport. The importance of parking capacity is underlined by the fact that Prague Airport currently issues approximately 2,500 parking permits for employees. “Alongside the development of parking capacity, we also support an internal Carpool programme that enables employees to use private cars more efficiently and share journeys for joint shifts,” adds Jiří Pos.
The investment amount reflects more than the pure number of parking spaces. The project had to take into account the specific conditions of building within the airport area, including the limited buildable areas and height limits set by aeronautical protection zones. These are the statutory areas around the airport and aviation structures that ensure safety and the smooth operation of air traffic. Thanks to the use of modern construction technologies and the split level system, it has been possible to achieve significantly greater parking capacity within the same floor plan. The project also includes elements to support energy self sufficiency and future development of electromobility.
A significant portion of the investment is represented by technological and structural solutions. The building will use a system of prestressed concrete slabs, which allows for slimmer load bearing structures and reduces the structural height of individual storeys. This made it possible to add an extra storey to the building and thus maximise its parking capacity.
The project will also include a rooftop photovoltaic array whose output will cover the car park’s energy consumption in normal operation. Standard features will include an intelligent internal lighting system that responds to the movement of people and vehicles, and a graphic colour coding of floors to aid user orientation. The building will also contain separate staff sanitary facilities.
The car park will comply with current legislative requirements for electromobility. On the ground floor there will be one charging point equipped with a smart wallbox, and the building will be structurally prepared for future expansion of the charging infrastructure to cover up to 20% of its parking capacity. Employees will also be able to use the planned eHUB at Car Park C, which will offer 17 rapid charging pedestals.
Prague Airport is also continuing to invest in expanding car parking capacity for passengers. As part of the planned modernisation, several projects will be implemented, the first of which is the construction of public Car Park B. According to the current schedule, its construction is due to begin at the start of next year.
