Prague Airport has launched a tender procedure for the construction of a new flyover, which will become the main traffic artery for the public area of the airport. The project will deliver a higher-capacity, safer, and more resilient transport system. It will be connected to the upcoming expansion of Terminal 2 and will significantly improve traffic organisation within the Václav Havel Airport Prague complex. According to the current schedule, the construction itself is expected to be completed in 2031.
The flyover will serve as the main traffic axis for the public area of the airport. It will encircle a large portion of the Sever (North) area, ensuring a smoother distribution of traffic. The construction of the flyover will also create a safer environment for passengers, employees, and airport visitors by redirecting traffic away from pedestrian zones. This will allow passengers to walk from public transport stops, train stations, or car parks to the terminals without having to cross vehicle traffic. The project includes the construction of a new three-lane flyover for incoming and outgoing traffic, complete with adjoining concourses in front of Terminals 1 and 2, and the associated access ramps. The concourse in front of Terminal 2 will also be extended to the planned Pier D, with traffic departing from the departures level routed via an elevated level all the way to the junction with Aviatická Street. Furthermore, the project encompasses modifications to other access roads, particularly around the slip road leading to the flyover section in front of Terminal 1, as well as Schengenská and Jana Kašpara streets, where a new, higher-capacity roundabout will be built.
“The new flyover project is a crucial part of the overall modernisation of Václav Havel Airport Prague. Its goal is to prepare the airport for continued growth in passenger numbers, enhance the quality of services, and ensure sufficient infrastructure capacity for the decades to come. The main benefit of the project will be the separation of various traffic streams and dividing private passenger vehicle traffic from airport operations, taxi services, public transport and pedestrians. Thanks to this, we will see increased safety, smoother traffic flow, and an overall improvement in the transport system’s resilience to exceptional situations,” explained Jiří Pos, Chairman of the Board of Directors, adding: “Simultaneously, the new design will eliminate numerous collision points, simplify navigation for passengers, and create a clearer, more comfortable public space in front of the terminals.”
The estimated price of the public contract is approximately CZK 2.3 billion. However, this is an estimate that will be refined during the tender procedure; the final price will be determined by the bids submitted by the tenderers. The commencement of construction is scheduled for the first quarter of 2028, with its completion anticipated in the second quarter of 2031. Construction will be carried out in stages while the airport remains fully operational, ensuring unhindered access to the terminals for passengers and allowing the uninterrupted operation of the emergency services at all times.
