Air Traffic to Be Temporarily Redirected to Secondary Runway Due to Regular Maintenance

Regular autumn maintenance of the main runway will move air traffic to the secondary runway for a short period of time. The main runway will be closed on selected days and in sequences during daytime operations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. between 16 and 27 October. Necessary scheduled works include runway rubber removal, signage renewal, inspection shaft checks, regular geodetic measurements, and underground object and manhole cover maintenance.

“The exact date will be set based on the current meteorological conditions to ensure the most efficient use of the time of the main runway closure,” Miroslav Charvát, Runway Administration and Operational Development Manager, said and added: “We will not proceed with maintenance on days with fog, low temperatures, and excessive wind. This is regular maintenance after the summer season, when there was continuous traffic on the main runway. The goal is to get the condition of the surface and the signs in the best possible condition before the winter season.”

During the closure, all air traffic will be redirected to the secondary runway 12/30. Taking into consideration the densely populated areas of Prague and Kladno, which are negatively affected by the secondary runway traffic, maintenance will only be performed during the daytime hours. At night, flights will be redirected to the main runway. The direction of traffic depends on the current meteorological conditions, especially the wind. However, the preferred direction for landing is from the direction of Prague, while take-offs are best towards Kladno.

With regard to operational safety, it is necessary to perform regular maintenance of the runway system twice a year, always in spring and autumn. Runway maintenance always lasts only the time necessary to ensure high-quality work and takes place during unrestricted airport regular operations.
