Turkey’s third largest city of İzmir is a popular tourist destination for its abundance of historical sites. Among the most important is the archaeological site of Smyrna, a city built in the 4th century, with its preserved courtyards, gates and temples. At the top of Pagos Hill stands the Kadifekale Castle, dating from the 3rd century, which offers spectacular views of the city. İzmir’s must-see is the nearby archaeological site of Ephesos, one of the largest and most significant remnants of the Roman Empire.
